Nightjet (ÖBB)

ÖBB's overnight sleeper network linking Austria, Germany, Switzerland, Italy and the Benelux.

Note: Nightjet no longer runs to Paris — Paris–Vienna and Paris–Berlin services ended in December 2025. The Brussels–Berlin Nightjet is also suspended. For disruption updates, see the Bulletin Board →

Overview

Nightjet is the night-train brand of ÖBB (Austrian Federal Railways), Europe's largest sleeper operator. Partner EuroNight trains to Central and Eastern Europe are sold alongside it.

Main routes (2026 timetable):

  • Austria – Germany: Vienna – Hamburg; Innsbruck – Munich – Hamburg; Vienna/Graz – Berlin.
  • Austria/Germany – Netherlands & Belgium: Vienna – Amsterdam; Innsbruck – Munich – Amsterdam; Vienna – Brussels (3 times a week).
  • Switzerland: Vienna – Zurich; Graz – Innsbruck – Zurich; Hamburg – Zurich; Berlin – Zurich; Amsterdam – Cologne – Zurich.
  • Italy: Vienna – Florence – Rome; Munich – Florence – Rome; Vienna – Venice; Munich – Venice.
  • Within Austria: Vienna – Innsbruck – Feldkirch/Bregenz.

Good to know: Routes and running days change each timetable year, and some trains run only on certain days of the week. Always check the train is running on your travel date.

New-generation Nightjet trains (with Mini Cabins and en-suite sleepers) currently run on routes including Hamburg – Vienna/Innsbruck, Amsterdam – Vienna/Innsbruck, Vienna/Munich – Rome, Hamburg – Zurich, Vienna – Zurich and Vienna – Bregenz.

Accommodation types

  • Seat: reclining seat in a 6-seat compartment (classic trains) or open coach — the cheapest option.
  • Couchette: 4- or 6-berth compartment with bedding. Ladies-only compartments are available. A whole compartment can be booked privately for 1–6 people.
  • Sleeper: private compartment for 1, 2 or 3 people. Standard has a washbasin; Deluxe has a private shower and toilet.
  • Mini Cabin (new-generation trains only): a private single-person pod, priced close to a couchette.

Luggage, bikes & pets

  • Luggage: stowed on racks or under seats/berths in your compartment. Travel light — space is limited in shared compartments.
  • Bikes: only on certain routes, with a separate bike ticket and reservation.
  • Pets: dogs are only allowed if you book the entire compartment, plus a dog ticket. Small pets in a carrier travel as hand luggage. Assistance dogs travel free.
  • Car transport: available only on selected Austrian routes (not on German, Italian, Swiss or Benelux routes) and booked directly with ÖBB — not through Rail Europe.

Boarding & check-in

  • There is no check-in. Arrive 15–20 minutes before departure and find your coach and compartment.
  • Take your place no later than 15 minutes after departure, or it may be released.
  • The attendant checks tickets when you board and may keep your ticket (and passport) overnight so you are not woken for inspections or border checks.
  • Carry a valid passport or national ID card — border checks can take place at night.

Tickets & fares

  • Your ticket includes your reservation for the chosen seat, couchette or sleeper.
  • Standard fares: free cancellation until the day before travel; no refund from the day of travel.
  • Sparschiene (saver) fares: limited availability with stricter exchange and refund conditions.
  • Children: under 6 travel free (sharing a berth); reduced fares apply for ages 6–14.
  • Combined tickets show the lead passenger's name only; other travellers are encoded in the QR code.

Food & Drinks on board

  • Breakfast is included in couchettes and sleepers. Couchette passengers receive a simple breakfast; sleeper passengers can choose items from a menu.
  • Snacks and drinks can be bought from the attendant. There is no restaurant car — bring food for the evening.
  • Special dietary requests should be made at least 72 hours before departure.
  • Free Wi-Fi is available on new-generation trains only.

Refunds & claims

  • Delay compensation: 25% of the fare for 60 minutes or more, 50% for 2 hours or more (minimum payout €4).
  • If you booked with Rail Europe, contact us at raileurope.com/en/contact/new with your RE- booking reference, provider reference, passenger names, train number and details of the delay.
  • Illness, bereavement and extra costs caused by disruption are not covered — claim these through your travel insurance.
