ITALO
Italo
Italy's privately-owned high-speed rail competitor to Trenitalia.
Overview
Italo (NTV) is Italy's privately owned high-speed competitor to Trenitalia, running on the same high-speed network between major Italian cities.
Luggage, bikes & pets
- Luggage (Smart fares): bags must be under 75×30×30cm; larger items go in the baggage areas at carriage ends, not overhead.
- Bikes: any bike that folds into a bag of 120×90cm or less travels free; the bag counts as one of your two permitted luggage items.
- Pets: small pets travel free in a carrier (one per passenger, must stay inside throughout). Medium/large dogs need a pet ticket booked directly with Italo, get a dedicated mat in Smart/Prima Business/all fare classes, and must be leashed and muzzled at boarding/alighting.
Boarding, check-in & mobile tickets
Arrive 20–30 minutes before departure; no formal check-in, but ticket/ID inspection may happen before boarding or onboard. Departures from Roma Termini, Milano Centrale, or Firenze SMN require a printed ticket for pre-boarding security—Italo's Casa Italo desks can print for you if needed; other stations have no pre-boarding check.
Classes
Italo offers three main travel classes, each providing a different level of comfort and onboard service.
- Smart: the standard class with comfortable reclining leather seats, footrests, power outlets, free Wi-Fi and access to onboard vending machines for snacks, coffee and cold drinks.
- Prima Business: offers wider reclining leather seats, more personal space, power outlets, free Wi-Fi, Fast Track and a complimentary welcome service with sweet or savoury snacks and drinks served at your seat.
- Club Executive: Italo's premium class with spacious armchairs, dedicated onboard catering, Fast Track and access to Italo Club Lounges.
- Club Salotto: a private compartment for up to four passengers within Club Executive, with the same premium services and dedicated catering.
Food & Drinks on board
Italo offers food and drink services onboard, with the options depending on the travel class and train. Passengers can enjoy Italian snacks, pastries, coffee, hot and cold beverages, and other refreshments during their journey.
- Smart: passengers can use the onboard vending machines to purchase Italian snacks, espresso coffee and cold drinks.
- Prima Business: includes a complimentary welcome service with sweet and savoury Italian snacks, coffee, tea and cold beverages delivered directly to the passenger's seat.
- Club Executive: includes dedicated onboard catering with a wider selection of Italian baked goods, sweet and savoury snacks, hot and cold drinks and espresso coffee served at the seat. Alcoholic beverages such as prosecco and beer may also be available during lunch and dinner.
- Vending machines: available on Italo trains for passengers who want to purchase snacks, coffee and beverages during the journey.
Good to know: On short-distance routes, the complimentary Prima Business snack and beverage service may not always be available because of the time required to provide the service.
