Overview

SJ is one of Sweden's principal passenger rail operators. Its services include high-speed trains such as X 2000 and SJ 3000, InterCity and regional trains, night trains and selected international services including SJ EuroNight.

Tickets & mobile/digital use

SJ supports digital tickets. If your Rail Europe booking provides an e-ticket or PDF, you can normally display it on your smartphone or print it before travelling.

  • You do not normally need to print an SJ e-ticket if the PDF can be displayed clearly on your mobile device.
  • Tickets purchased through SJ can also be downloaded and displayed in the SJ app.
  • Keep your device sufficiently charged so that your ticket can be displayed when requested onboard.
  • Tickets may be personal. Carry valid identification where required by the ticket conditions.
  • If travelling with a discounted youth, student or senior fare, carry any supporting identification or discount documentation required for that fare.

Classes

SJ offers 1st and 2nd Class on many of its trains. The onboard experience and services included vary depending on the train type and route.

  • 2nd Class: SJ's standard travel class, offering comfortable seating and access to the onboard facilities available on the service.
  • 1st Class: Offers additional comfort and benefits on selected services, which may include more spacious seating and other onboard amenities.

The exact services and benefits can vary by train. Check the class and ticket details displayed during your Rail Europe booking before purchase.

Boarding & check-in

There is no airport-style check-in for standard SJ train journeys. Arrive with enough time to locate your platform and carriage and be ready to board before departure.

  • Have your valid ticket ready for inspection onboard.
  • Where a seat reservation is included, travel in the carriage and seat shown on your ticket.
  • Seat allocation is common on SJ high-speed and long-distance trains.
  • Allow additional time when travelling with luggage, bicycles, children or if you have booked passenger assistance.

Luggage & bikes

  • Standard luggage: Each passenger may bring up to two bags, each measuring no more than 80×50×35cm and weighing up to 20kg, plus a smaller item of hand luggage.
  • Special luggage: You may also bring items such as a folded stroller or ski case, subject to available space and SJ's baggage conditions.
  • Handling: You must be able to carry and store your luggage yourself. Train staff cannot normally assist with lifting baggage on or off the train.
  • Bicycles: On standard SJ services, bicycles must generally be foldable or disassembled and packed in a bicycle bag.
  • The bicycle bag must not exceed 140×85×30cm or 25kg.
  • SJ EuroNight: Different bicycle arrangements apply. If travelling with a bicycle on EuroNight, check the specific conditions before booking.

Traveling with pets

Pets are permitted on SJ trains, but you must travel in a designated pet-friendly area.

  • Pets are permitted in designated areas in 2nd class.
  • Select that you are travelling with a pet when booking so that a seat can be allocated in the pet-friendly section.
  • Each passenger may bring a maximum of two pets, provided they fit on the floor beside the passenger's seat.
  • Pets must remain on the floor and must not sit on passenger seats or on the traveller's lap.
  • If your pets require more floor space, an additional seat may need to be booked according to SJ's conditions.
  • Guide and assistance dogs are subject to separate rules and can travel in both 1st and 2nd class when the applicable requirements are met.

Wheelchair & assistance

SJ offers free assistance for passengers who need help getting to or from the train or when changing trains.

  • Assistance should be booked no later than 24 hours before departure.
  • Wheelchair spaces are available on many SJ services. Trains offering wheelchair facilities are normally identified during booking.
  • Many SJ trains are equipped with wheelchair lifts, but the maximum permitted wheelchair dimensions and weight vary by train type.
  • On some trains with reservations, a wheelchair space can be selected during booking.
  • On services where wheelchair spaces cannot be booked online, contact SJ in advance for assistance.
  • SJ EuroNight currently has different accessibility restrictions, so wheelchair users should check the specific service before booking.

Food & drinks on board

Food and drink services vary depending on the SJ train and route. On selected long-distance and high-speed services, food, snacks and drinks are available to purchase onboard.

  • High-speed and long-distance trains: Selected services have a bistro or onboard food service where passengers can purchase meals, snacks, coffee and other drinks.
  • Pre-ordering: On selected journeys, food can be pre-ordered after booking. Availability depends on the train and departure.
  • 1st class: Complimentary or included food and drink services may be available on selected trains, depending on the service and ticket conditions.
  • Night trains and SJ EuroNight: Catering arrangements vary by route and train. Some services offer food and drinks for purchase onboard.
  • Regional services: Catering may not be available, so passengers may wish to purchase food and drinks before boarding.

Onboard catering is not available on every SJ service. Check the facilities shown for your specific train before travelling.

Refunds & claims

Whether you can cancel or change your SJ ticket depends on the fare conditions selected when booking.

  • Refundable tickets: If your Rail Europe ticket permits cancellation, you can usually request a refund through your Rail Europe account before the applicable deadline.
  • Rebookable tickets: Changes are subject to the conditions shown with your booking. Check your Rail Europe booking for the options available.
  • Non-rebookable tickets: Normally cannot be refunded or changed for personal reasons, except where an exceptional-circumstances claim is accepted.
  • Delays and cancellations: Keep your original ticket, proof of the disruption and receipts for any additional expenses.
  • As a general rail passenger-rights guideline, delays of 60–119 minutes may qualify for compensation of 25% of the affected ticket value, while delays of 120 minutes or more may qualify for 50%. Eligibility remains subject to the operator's conditions.
