Accommodation differences between travel classes

Different rail carriers offer different accommodation classes depending on the train type and route. While not every service offers every class, the information below explains the general differences you can expect.

Please note: The services available may vary depending on the train type, route and country. Always check the amenities displayed during booking.

Eurostar

On continental routes (France, Belgium, Netherlands, Germany), Plus mainly offers more spacious seating without meal service.
Eurostar Premier 2+1 seating Maximum comfort, fully flexible ticket, priority boarding, lounge access (where available), premium meal served at your seat on London routes, complimentary drinks, free Wi-Fi, power sockets.

Good to know

  • Meal service in Eurostar Plus and Premier depends on the route.
  • Lounge access is available only at selected stations for Premier passengers.

  • Executive Class is available only on selected Frecciarossa trains.
  • Frecciargento and Frecciabianca trains generally offer only First and Second Class.

  • Regional trains (RE, RB, S-Bahn) generally offer fewer onboard amenities than ICE services.
  • Wi-Fi is primarily available on ICE trains.

  • Business Class is available only on selected Railjet services.

National Rail

The available classes depend on the train operator.

Most long-distance operators offer:

  • Amenities vary significantly by train operating company (e.g. LNER, Avanti West Coast, Great Western Railway, CrossCountry).
  • Many regional and commuter services operate Standard Class only.
  • Complimentary catering is not available on all First Class services. 

SNCF TGV INOUI

  • Where First Class is available, the differences are generally limited to additional space and a quieter coach.
  • TER trains do not usually offer Wi-Fi, onboard catering, or seat reservations. 

SBB

    • First Class provides more personal space but the onboard services remain largely the same as Second Class.
    • Business and Quiet Zones are available on selected InterCity services.
    • Amenities vary by train category (InterCity, InterRegio, RegioExpress, Regional). 

RhB (Rhätische Bahn)

    • The Bernina Express and Glacier Express (operated jointly with partners) also offer premium classes and optional Excellence Class on selected services.
    • Standard RhB regional trains generally offer only First and Second Class with similar onboard facilities.

Bene (Belgium Domestic Services – SNCB/NMBS)

    • Domestic Belgian trains generally do not provide complimentary meals or lounge access. 
    • First Class mainly offers extra comfort and a quieter travel environment. 
    • Facilities vary between InterCity (IC), Local (L), and Suburban (S) services.
