How to Get a Refund for Your Rail Pass
If your travel plans have changed, you may be eligible for a refund on your rail pass depending on the pass type, activation status, and fare conditions. You can request most refunds directly through your Rail Europe account.
Before You Start
- Rail passes must generally be unused and non-activated to qualify for a refund.
- Refund eligibility and cancellation fees depend on the pass provider and fare conditions which can be viewed on your order confirmation or by retrieving the booking from My Trips.
- Some promotional or special fares may be non-refundable it can be viewed on your order confirmation or under My Trips.
- Refunds are usually credited back to the original payment method within a few business days once processed.
How to Request a Refund via Rail Europe
Step 1: Sign in to Your Rail Europe Account
Go to your Rail Europe account and open Your Trips.
Even if you checked out as a guest, you can create an account later using the same email address used during booking to access your orders.
Step 2: Select the Pass You Want to Refund
Locate the rail pass booking and review the fare conditions.
After retrieving the booking, click on cancellation options. Select the pass to be refunded and click on calculate refund.
Step 3: Review the Refund Amount
You’ll see:
- Original pass price
- Applicable cancellation fee (if any)
- Total refund amount
Step 4: Confirm the Refund Request
Once confirmed:
- You’ll receive a confirmation email
- The cancelled pass will appear in your booking history
- Refunds are processed back to the original payment method
Depending on your bank, it may take several business days for the refund to appear.
Deactivate Travel Days if the travel days have been activated (applicable for Eurail Pass & Swiss Travel Pass Flex).
If you receive an error while requesting a refund, your pass may already be activated.
Depending on your pass type:
Eurail / Interrail Passes
- Deactivate all travel days in the Rail Planner app before requesting the refund.
- Deactivation of the days must be done before you enter the particular rail pass day. Once you are within the rail pass activated day, deactivation won't be possible anymore.
Swiss Travel Pass Flex
- Deactivate travel days through activateyourpass.com before proceeding.
- Deactivation is possible only up to 11:59 p.m. on the day before the activated days.
Important Notes
Group Bookings
For rail passes, partial cancellations are generally not supported.
If one traveler from a group booking no longer wishes to travel, the entire booking may need to be cancelled and rebooked for the remaining passengers.
