Train station interchanges and transfers

The station interchange and train transfer times we show in our search results are set by the rail operator. You should always have enough time to make your connection, as these are built into the search, but you can modify your search if you'd like longer to change trains. 



An interchange is when you change trains that arrive and depart from the same station. You will disembark the first train, walk to the main concourse and read the digital displays to find which platform your connecting train departs from. 

We recommend leaving plenty of time, even for same-station changes because although European train stations are usually well signposted, it can be tricky to find your way around a new place. 


A transfer means that you will need to travel between different train stations, either on foot, by taxi or on public transport. The cost of public transport will not usually be included in the price of your ticket. It is very common to change stations in Paris, but transfers in Milan and Turin are also common. There is information about some of the most popular transfers on Rail Europe, e.g. Changing trains in Paris, but you are advised to carry out research about the transfer before placing your order, and build in additional time if you think you need it.

Increasing the time between trains

If you feel that the recommended interchange or transfer is too short, or you want to build in time for another reason - lunch in Paris perhaps or even stay overnight - you can do so by editing your search and using the "More options" functionality. This tool can also be used to reduce the amount of time between trains, but please do so with caution. Note that in the case of international trains, your trip may not be covered by the CIV rules governing international rail journeys if you opt for a very short interchange which doesn't leave a practical window in which to change trains. 


In case of connecting Renfe trains, passengers missing the train on the second leg of the journey due to a delay in the arrival of the train on the first leg at the connecting station/city, can request for a refund on the second leg of the journey only if:

  • The connecting time is more than 60 minutes for connection from the same station.
  • The connecting time is more than 90 minutes for connection from a different station within the same municipality.

Even though the refund request can be submitted, it is not guaranteed and depends on the railway's discretion. Also, the request can be submitted only if all the legs of the journey belong to RENFE.
